Description
Morphology
The cave has two openings; one of them, the larger one, is artificial, and both are connected by a short, low gallery. The vertical range of the cavity is 20 metres (+19/-1).
Hydrology
From the natural opening a gallery begins that follows the little river upstream; in some places the gallery loses height due to abundant sedimentation, causing the gallery to flood. It gains width where it joins the gallery coming from the artificial entrance. A stretch without water follows until a chamber where a conduit coming from the artificial entrance converges; 40 metres further on we find the river again, shallow but occupying the entire width of the gallery. The gallery turns 90º, producing a new pool while the width of the gallery decreases. The water flows again through an impenetrable zone, but a small side conduit allows the river to be found again at various points, until reaching a small chamber of clastic origin occupied by a significant quantity of water. Following the course of the river through a narrow gallery we reach a point where the water emerges through a bedding joint with no possibility of continuation.
Progression
Returning to the main gallery, it bifurcates about 25 metres on and the river is found again; a low-roofed stretch follows. After this one reaches the most important sector of the cave as regards its volume, until arriving at a chaos of blocks where the regularity of the gallery is broken, while the height of the ceiling diminishes. Further on, on the left, one reaches a fossil gallery at a higher level, which connects at various points with the lower gallery, meeting it again 70 metres further on. From here one reaches the final sector of the cave, characterised by important clastic processes that form a false upper floor and where, via a chimney, one can reach the highest part of the cavity.
Other details
An interesting but contaminated cave with 962 metres of passage in Beuda.
History
In 1968, members of the Centre Excursionista Empordanès partially explored a cavity that they named Mina de Can Trompa and which is undoubtedly the same one that members of the GIE - CE Gràcia fully explored and surveyed at the beginning of 1970, naming it Cova de la Mosquera and which was not published until 1978. That same year, members of the SIRE - UEC Sants published a complete work on the cavity, making use of the GIE survey, extended with an elevation and sections. It is curious that, on the same survey, the GIE interprets the passage as 900 m and the SIRE grants it 717 m.
During the GE Badalona campaign in the Alta Garrotxa area, in 1994 they resurveyed the cavity and explored some new branches, fixing the passage at 962 m.
It should be recorded that in 1969 a pig farm was installed at the site, dumping the slurry into the torrent, which infiltrated into the cavity, damaging the cave up to the present time. The large number of flies that this caused was the reason that led the members of the GIE to name it Mosquera.
