Characteristics

Location

We will head to the village of l’Alforja, and along the C-242 we will go to the coll d’Alforja where we will turn right towards Arbolí on the TV-7012. Further on and before reaching km 2, we will turn off towards La Febró/La Mussara on the TV-7092. 2.5 km later, on a very sharp bend and just after passing the Mas d’en Bruno, we will turn right onto a dirt track heading to the Mas d'en Rei. Following the track for about 600 metres we will turn right at the Planeta; 300 metres further on we leave the car under the AT line and continue on foot until the track ends at the height of Lo Pilanet; a little before this we will find on the left a well-marked path, which goes around the base of the cingle de lo Pilanet to place us at the cingle Blanc with views of l’Alforja; we find signposts of a hiking itinerary. Along this path we will go parallel to the cingle Blanc at some distance from it, in the direction of the AT line. After a walk of about 30 minutes we will reach the cova Fumada without problems, and we will find the cova de l’Aleu a few metres further on.

Description

Morphology

Cavity with 4 known entrances; its formation is related to a large collapse of part of lo cingle Blanc, its galleries having formed at the expense of these large blocks. To access the interior of the cave we will preferably use the mouth marked as number 4, which is the one we find furthest W. Coming from the Cova Fumada the first mouths we find are 2 and 3. These are two openings of 0.65x0.65 metres and 0.41x1.25 metres respectively and they connect at different heights with the Sala Gran by means of a P-3 and a P-5.50. Mouth number 1 has two openings, currently impassable, and is perched towards the E. Mouth 4 is 0.80x0.40 and through it we enter a descending gallery that after 6 metres turns right; this gallery continues to the Sala Gran, descending by a kind of steps made artificially in the ground. On our right we leave a low-roofed chamber about 4 metres long. On reaching the Sala Gran, on the right we find another room also with a low roof of 5x2x1.20 metres. The Sala Gran is the most spacious place in the whole cavity with its 10 metres of height and approximately 6x6 width. This spot has natural light coming from entrances 2 and 3. Going in an E direction we will find a drop beside a large block and, after overcoming an r-1, we continue along a gallery 3.50 metres wide by 9.50 metres high for about ten metres. Here the gallery forks; if we continue to the left in an ascending direction, after 6 metres it forks again, the crawl on the left ends after 2.50 metres, and the one on the right, after 2.20 metres, brings us through a window to the continuation of the main gallery at a higher level. Here we will descend an r-1.10 and climb up two exposed projections until reaching the base of the small shaft that gives onto mouth number 1 (E+2.40), half covered by unstable blocks. If we return to the first fork, we will go by the right-hand way in a SE direction, descending about 5 metres and finding an r-0.50. We have reached the Sala dels graffitis, the end point of the explorations of occasional visitors, where the oldest inscription dates from 1911. Three metres further on we find a small shaft down which we will descend 2.80 metres, reaching the total depth of -18 metres and finding a very narrow gallery that could be the one connecting with the terminal part of the Cova Fumada.

History

Cavity well known to the villagers, since it forms part of the historical and natural heritage of Arbolí, and, due to its proximity, also of the neighbouring village of l’Alforja. Prehistoric site and human habitation from different periods, also a possible counterfeit coin factory, it served as a hiding place during the civil wars (the Carlist wars and that of 1936-39). The first mention is found at the hand of Joan Ferraté from Reus, although his description of the cavity corresponds to that of the Cova Fumada. Cavity explored and excavated in 1935 by another distinguished man from Reus, Salvador Vilaseca, finding a large granite hand mill (50x30x10 cm), a prehistoric hearth and various ceramic fragments, some with reliefs and others with raised cords of red paste. For this reason this cave is inventoried as a site within the Cultural Heritage of Immovable Property. Archaeological Heritage with register number 2293 (GENCAT. Departament de Cultura). Cited in the Catàleg Espeleològic de Catalunya where the data of Joan Ferraté are repeated.
