A 92 m long cave at El Port (Horta de Sant Joan), long known as Cova Cabrera.

Characteristics

Location

At El Port (Horta de Sant Joan). Going up the path that leads to the refugi de les Clotes, one must leave it where it passes exactly S of Punta Serena and go down toward the torrent on our right; once there, we cross to the other side of the slope and follow a faint trail toward the W. The cave opens about 50 metres to the left of the trail, precisely in a fissure reached after a short scramble.

Difficult to locate, as it remains hidden in a crag. From this crag Punta Serena is seen at a bearing of 17º.

Description

Morphology

Once past the entrance, the cavity continues with a downward ramp occupied by blocks and with a ceiling that coincides with the bedding.

At the bottom one reaches a small chamber with plunge pools. Other galleries develop transversely to the main gallery.

History

Known since long ago, Cova Cabrera is so named because legend says that General Cabrera took refuge inside it with his troops during the Carlist revolts. Ramon Cabrera i Grinyó (Tortosa, 27 December 1806; Wentworth, United Kingdom, 24 May 1877) was one of the military leaders of the Carlist revolts, popularly known in the area as lo Tigre del Maestrat.

The first exploration for which there is documentary evidence is the one carried out by members of the Espeleo Club de Gràcia in June 1979.
