Bauma de Comamorera

Bauma de Comamorera

Àmplia balma vora el Salt de Sallent (Capolat, Berguedà)

Capolat • Berguedà14m0

A 52 m long and 14 m deep rock shelter near the Salt de Sallent, in the Berguedà, between Capolat and l’Espunyola, used as a livestock pen.

Characteristics

Location

The rock shelter is located at the upper part of the Salt de Sallent, situated on the boundary between the municipalities of Capolat (to the north) and l’Espunyola (to the south), in the Berguedà.

From l’Espunyola you must go to the church of the Sants Metges, located about one kilometre away, a place where we can leave the car. The path begins in front of the cemetery. The first stretch of the route runs through a holm oak wood where we observe accumulations of conglomerate blocks from rockfalls from the cingle de Malla, which we have at a considerable drop above us. Some of the blocks are spectacular in size, to the point of having a name, as is the case of the “Roc de la Bruixa” past the side of which we must pass, or the “Roc de les Mosses” or the “Roc de l’Aigua”.

The route continues uphill along a network of paths that would be difficult to describe were it not that we simply follow the marks of the GR-1, since we do the whole route along it. We will gradually approach the Salt de Sallent, which overcomes the cingle with a fall of the order of 70 m, although it does not always carry water. Finally, the path leaves us at the upper part of the fall, where we will find the rock shelter, situated only about 40 m from the drop point of the Salt de Sallent.

Description

Morphology

A beautiful rock shelter 52 m long with a depth of 14 m situated beneath a stratum of conglomerate. The floor is very flat, totally occupied by sheep droppings that are not recent. The ceiling, very regular, descends as we go deeper. We could say that the average height of the rock shelter is around 2 m.

Inside the rock shelter there are two transverse stone walls that divide it into three chambers.

Hydrology

Just at its northern terminal end the water of the stream plunges down, forming a small waterfall and pool.

History

The rock shelter has been used as a livestock pen until not too distant times. For this purpose, it is surrounded by a metal mesh fence in order to keep and shelter the livestock. In fact, the whole floor is occupied by a notable thickness of sheep droppings that are not recent. A few metres above the rock shelter there is an abandoned “roulotte” that served as the shepherd’s refuge.

The place name “Bauma de Comamorera” appears labelled on the Editorial Alpina map “Rasos de Peguera”. Even so, the cavity does not appear in any speleological catalogue despite having quite important dimensions.
