A 70-metre-deep pit in Sant Martí de Llémena, with several entrances (no. 7, 8, 9 and 10) that form part of the Sant Martí pit.

Location

Leaving from Sant Martí de Llémena, we will follow the GIV-5315 road towards Rocacorba, at kilometre 2.25, level with can Perot, we will turn right towards “el Feliu”, continuing towards the “clot del Raig”. On the flat area bounded by the cliff and less than 20 metres from it, there is a long fissure that can be followed for some 500 metres. The pits develop along a 230-metre stretch within this fissure.

Following the main outer fissure, after pit no. 6 of the Pas dels Llops, we find after about 15 metres a small hole of -3 metres, and immediately afterwards a depression begins, at the bottom of which entrance no. 7 opens; further on we find entrances no. 8 and 9 and already at the upper part of the depression we find no. 10. All four entrances form part of the Sant Martí pit.

Description

Morphology

The entrance of pit no. 7 of the Pas dels Llops gives access to a -6-metre shaft, a ramp leads us to a 30-metre shaft, of which the last 15 are free-hanging. At the base we find a gallery of notable dimensions, this is the lower gallery of the pit. Continuing the gallery towards the SW, we climb a ramp of large blocks followed by several small shafts that place us at the deepest point of the cavity.

The entrance of no. 8, in the form of a rock shelter, gives way to a shaft of about 20 metres with several ledges, a 10.5-metre shaft leads us to a chamber, from here we find a small shaft that is descended by re-belaying, then a narrow gallery leads us to another of larger dimensions, which is the same one that we find at the base of pit no. 7.

The entrance of no. 9 is a shaft of ample dimensions and -10 metres deep, at its base, a gallery places us on the first ledge of the -20-metre shaft of entrance no. 8.

The entrance of no. 10 is a small 8-metre shaft followed by a ramp that leads us to the base of the entrance shaft of entrance no. 9.

History

This group of fissures was known to the woodcutters, a shepherd of the area indicated them to the members of the GIS de Girona, who explored them during Easter week of 1972. The GIS de Girona named this group of cavities with the initials 0-0-L A-7; A-8; A-9 and A-10.

On the other hand, members of the SIRE–UEC (Gràcia), carried out various prospections in the area, locating some unpublished cavities, among which is this one, which they named avenc de Sant Martí, the explorations of these cavities they carried out from the month of May 1972.
