Characteristics

Location

From the C-12 road, once past Xerta, there is the turn-off towards Prat de Comte (T-333). A couple of kilometres before reaching this village (km 28.5) a track leaves to the left which must be followed. Past the Pla de la Refoia the track forks and the right-hand turn must be taken, in the direction of the Tossal d'Engrilló. One kilometre before its end, the track makes a marked hairpin bend and this is where the car must be left. A stone cairn marks the direction to follow, towards the barranc d'Engrilló, and within a few minutes the mouth of the pit is found, on the wall of a rocky bank and a few metres from a monumental tree, the Teix d'Engrilló.

Description

Morphology

The mouth, open at the foot of a small natural bank, gives way to a descending gallery of small dimensions and 40º of inclination. After 36 metres it reaches the ceiling of a chamber. At the E end of the chamber, a new gallery emerges. At 23 metres the water falls down a small 5-metre shaft.

Speleothems

The chamber is beautifully decorated with all kinds of lithogenic forms.

Hydrology

Through the new gallery at the E end of the chamber flows a small flow of water that is born from different drips located in the chamber. At 23 metres the water falls down a small 5-metre shaft feeding a pool at its base which overflows into a crawlway that sumps within a few metres.

History

We know of no previous reference to this cavity. During some ERE campaigns in Terra Alta they were informed by the parishioners of the bar of a whole series of cavities, this one turning out to be the most interesting. The first exploration and survey was carried out by members of the ERE – CEC on 22-2-1981.
