Description

Morphology

The entrance opens at the bottom of a doline 20 metres in diameter and 7 metres in drop. The cylindrical shaft at the start gradually acquires a bell shape as one descends. The shaft is joined laterally with another vertical conduit through respective openings at -5 and at -9 metres and another of larger dimensions at -18 metres, above a platform of fitted blocks.

History

The first exploration was carried out by the team of Rafael Amat i Carreras on 10 February 1924.

The same Amat gives an account of a legendary story about this pit. It was said that many years ago some thieves were detained at Begues, who were to be taken to the coasts of Garraf to embark on a frigate and be taken to serve the sentence that justice had determined. Those in charge of conducting them along the path from Begues to Garraf grew tired of the task entrusted to them and halfway they threw them into an unknown pit that they found during the journey. On returning to the village, the people of Begues asked if they had already completed the task and they answered: "Yes, the thieves are on the frigate".

But it turned out that one of the thieves did not fall and, with the help of a shepherd, was able to get out and later was able to bring out his companions.

Once the truth became known, the unknown pit was named avenc de la Fragata.
