A 142 m deep pit in the Port massif, NE of the summit of mont Caro, at the Punta de la Barcina (1354 m).

Characteristics

Location

NE of the summit of mont Caro, more specifically in the area of the Punta de la Barcina (1354 m). To locate it, take the track that climbs to the installations of mont Caro and at a very sharp right-hand bend, shortly before the coll del Vicari, a path branches off that climbs directly to the nearby ridge, which must be followed towards the NE until reaching some flats located on the N slope of the summit of la Barcina (about 20 minutes of walking). At this point there is the head of a ravine that descends towards the NW and a few metres along it one finds the mouth of the pit, in the lower part of a pinkish limestone band.

Description

Morphology

The cavity begins with a 24 metre pit, not very wide, down to a small ledge situated above the second pit of 19 metres, which leads to a chamber of notable dimensions. At 3 metres from the start of this second vertical, and thanks to a small pendulum, a short side gallery can be reached which, with an 8 metre drop and a 13 metre pit, also brings one to the aforementioned chamber.

From this chamber two possibilities of continuation present themselves: a 28 metre pit, on the N wall of the chamber, and a small 8 metre pit on the S side; descending the latter brings one into a small chamber from which several galleries emerge that connect with the P.28. Following the most evident one, after passing over a pit that opens in the floor of the chamber, one reaches a ledge 11 metres above the base of the N pit of the chamber. From here there are also two options to continue: descend a 4 metre drop and follow a narrow, descending fissure that opens on the left; or, from the base of the P-28, climb a 3 metre drop and further on descend a P.8 that leaves one past the fissure of the other route. Once here, with a short slightly descending gallery, we reach a small chamber where a 9 metre drop opens, downclimbable from the small chamber but, some galleries without much interest emerge. Having descended this 9 metre drop we find ourselves at the beginning of the final fissure of the cavity. The first 18 metres are wide enough to allow comfortable progress without a rope, afterwards however, it becomes extremely narrow (level – 110) and although it can be descended without a rope, this can be useful when ascending; at the end it becomes a little wider and the maximum depth of the cavity is reached at – 142 metres with respect to the mouth.

History

The first exploration was carried out by members of the SIRE – UEC Tortosa in the summer of 1982, giving it a depth of 150 metres.

During 1985 it was visited by members of the SIE-CEA, who on 8 December of that year made the only survey known so far and fixed the level of maximum depth at – 142 metres.
