Description

Morphology

Once past the small earthy mouth and a step, one reaches a small chamber (-8 m) which connects at its base with an 11 metre shaft joined laterally with a large fusiform-type concavity that descends to the -46 level. The cavity continues down a steep slope towards a new shaft, 4 metres in diameter, which reaches 71 metres of depth and at its bottom it is still possible to descend a couple more metres among the blocks of its base.

Returning to the second shaft, this is joined laterally with another that reaches 73 metres of depth and this, in turn, with another located further to the S and between the two there are remains of a separating partition. This last shaft communicates at the -50 level with the upper zone of an independent cavity that is much narrower and of labyrinthine composition, which links with other shafts joined by their domes and by a narrow ascending gallery above the base of the last shaft (level -82). At this point a small embryonic cavity reaches the point of maximum depth of the pit.

Other details

Cavity of great structural complexity over a series of independent cavities originated by the different points of the upper doline and by points of the rascler. Subsequently, these concavities, some more evolved than others, came to join by total or partial coalescence.

History

The small depression, which later became the pit, was discovered by Antonio Asensio (àlies: Pipa), a member of the AEEF (Agrupació Excursionista d'Etnografia i Folklore) who often went out with friends from the GES – CMB.

On 26 and 27 January 1957, when the first exploration of the avenc del Mall was also carried out, the pit was cleared and a first partial exploration was undertaken. Participants were: J. Balart, F. Monmany, E. Auqué (GES-CMB); A. Asensio (AEEF) and J. Garcia (àlies: el Misto), E: Pomerol I I. Cayuela (ERE-CEC). In fact, Asensio wanted to name the pit with his nickname, Avenc d'en Pipa, but his companions convinced him to use his real name.

On 9 and 10 February 1957 the first full exploration was carried out. Participants were: JM. Anglada, A. Anglada, F. Monmany, J. Cumellas, J. Balart, L. Muntan, O. Andrés, D. Alegre and X. Coromines (GES-CMB); L. Martínez, N. Ferreró and "Charito" (ERE-CEC); A. Asensio (AEEF).

It was not until 7 and 8 December of the same 1957 that members of the GES-CMB carried out the survey of the cavity. (Information provided by Lluís Muntan, GES – CMB).
