The grotte des Eygues, in Verrières in Aveyron, forms a vast underground network of fossil and active galleries, pits and sumps, linked to the spring of the Eygues.
Descrizione
Morfologia
The grotte des Eygues, located in the commune of Verrières, in Aveyron, develops a vast underground network composed of fossil galleries, active conduits, pits and several sumps. The cavity begins with a corridor of about twenty metres, followed by narrow, winding crawls leading to the Salle de la Guillotine, where a 10-metre pit gives access to sumps S1 and S2.
The explorations reported in 2016 total 9,807 m of surveyed development, for a vertical range of 300 m, between the upstream point located at +294 m and an area near the entrance descending to -6 m.
Idrologia
The cave constitutes a major hydrological network of the Causse Rouge and is connected with the spring of the Eygues. Its behaviour is marked by floods that are sometimes sudden, liable to flood galleries that are usually dry.
Progressione
Progression continues through aquatic galleries and sometimes narrow passages, requiring in places progression in the water. The network includes in particular the galerie des Nénuphars, the puits des Palmiers and several successive sumps. A significant part of the development continues as a rivière souterraine (underground river), with sections explored by diving.
Altri dettagli
The cavity also presents archaeological and palaeontological interest, with the discovery of Palaeolithic faunal bones in the galleries near the entrance.
