Grotte de Mai

A small vertical entrance gives access to the first chamber. From it, a low horizontal network about forty metres long branches off to the left. Towards the end of it, a step (down-climb) leads to a low point (-13 m).

To the right, a first 2 m step brings you into a short passage. From it, 2 parallel down-climbs (4 m) open into a chaotic chamber (18 m by 8 m). On the ceiling, one notices the “inverted lapies” that indicate an ancient fill, and the large blocks detaching from the walls (relaxation of the limestone massif following the cutting of the combe de Bret).

In the wall, near the scree cone that blocks the upper part of the chamber (same side as the P 22), the P 22 starts, which is narrow. After the constriction enlarged by the G.O.R.S., one is in the most voluminous part of the cave. A constriction located below the arrival point divides this part into 2 chambers. The upper part ends in a scree cone, the lower part in a flat floor at the -39 m level.

At the foot of one of the down-climbs, a P 9 starts, occupying a joint. The bottom of the joint can also be reached by another pit starting between the blocks in the chamber. Opposite the P 9, still between blocks, is a short descending network (-19 m).

The P 22 can be down-climbed to the constriction enlarged by the G.O.R.S. (rope advised). After it, a rope is essential to descend the last 6 metres of the pit (arrival on a block).

The lower part of the chamber ends in a flat floor (gours, clayey sand) at the -39 m level.
