Caratteristiche

Località

At km 23.3 on the T-700 road, already within Prades, there is a car park and just on the other side of the road we find the carrer dels Colomers. We will follow this street, which soon becomes a track and continues in a NE direction. After approximately 3 km the track is closed to vehicle traffic. We will have to leave the car and continue on foot for about 500 metres. The cave, which is signposted, is 50 metres from the track, on our right.

From the cova gran we will pass through the arch located on the W side and we will see the cova petita about 5 metres further to the W and somewhat elevated.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance is 15 metres wide and has a maximum height of 5 metres. It was formerly closed off by a low wall with an access door, now quite deteriorated.

The cave more or less maintains its width (8 metres at the back) and gradually loses height down to 2 metres at the back, located 19 metres from the entrance. Directly above its entrance, and quite high up on its exterior, one can still see the holes where the beams that supported the roof rested when it extended to the outer ashlar wall, located between 4 and 5 metres out from the entrance wall. To the W a doorway with an arch is preserved.

The cova petita has a mouth 3 metres wide and leads to a small chamber of the same width and 5 metres deep.

Storia

Known since time immemorial. Its names come from en Pere Balcells i Masgoret, born in Prades on 31 March 1855, a guerrilla fighter during the Third Carlist War, better known as el nen de Prades. His father worked as a shepherd at one of the richest houses in the village, Cal Perotis, owned by en Pere Roig.
