Caratteristiche

Località

In the Montsec d'Ares, Sant Esteve de la Sarga. From La Masieta, where the car park for going to the Congost de Mont-rebei is, follow the path in the direction of the gorge and soon turn off to the left along a track almost parallel to the previous one but at a higher level (it is used to go to the gorge when the reservoir is full). After 750 metres you reach a col where on the right there are the ruins of a building; you must follow the path on the left, signposted, towards the barranc de la Maçana and les Carboneres. The path continues in a slight climb up to the spot where the barrancs of la Maçana and de Sant Jaume meet; from here it descends rapidly towards the barranc. At a specific point there is an installation with a cable on both sides of the barranc de la Maçana that makes the crossing easier; you climb back up the other side of the barranc towards the barranc de Sant Jaume, which passes by the entrances of the pit and of the coveta del Camí del Barranc de la Maçana. A few metres further on, at the point where there is a signpost, the path turns left and begins to descend; a few metres further on, on the left a hidden little path branches off and climbs rapidly. On reaching the rocky area without vegetation you go to the right, traversing the rocky ground until level with a dead holm oak of which only the trunk is left standing (ETRS89: X:309034; Y:4661775). The cave is in the gully a few metres below, very well hidden.

Descrizione

Morfologia

The entrance is 0.35 x 0.40 metres and faces a drop of 2.5 metres in depth; below it there is a narrow passage that gives access to its base. Here there is a sloping gallery with many remains of the excavations carried out by the archaeologists, which leads to a point where the gallery becomes wider. On the left-hand side, after a crawling passage, there is a drop of -5 metres that places you on a lower level, the galeria dels ossos. Back in the main gallery, this narrows again and a new drop of -2 metres must be overcome, currently (2017) rigged with a rope, which places you in a gallery that ends in the Sala Blanca. From the base of the last -2 metre drop there are some conduits that place you on two levels of superimposed galleries, and from the Sala Blanca a small pit can be descended that places you at the point of maximum depth of the cavity at -39 metres.

Concrezioni

In the Sala Blanca there is an abundant profusion of stalactites.
