Caratteristiche

Località

The cavity is located in the Comiols area, in the municipality of Isona i Conca Dellà. It is reached via the road that runs from the coll de Comiols towards Sant Salvador de Toló (L-911): after 700 metres you must turn left onto a track heading to cal Castellí, and follow it until you find a padlock that blocks vehicle access. From here 1200 metres remain to cal Castellí. Once at the farmhouse, there is a huge metal water tank; you must pass in front of it and continue in a W direction, to rejoin the path that passes by the farmhouse, and thus avoid the dogs that guard it. The path continues and passes below and to the left of some cultivated fields; further on it begins to descend along the left of an incipient torrent, reaches a point where the main path is left to the left and the torrent is crossed, following along its right bank until shortly arriving at the ruined village of Montadó. You must head to the remains of the house situated furthest west and from there descend to the next terrace, follow it in an E direction until reaching the Balma, which is located at the base of the cliff right below the ruined Montadó.

Morfologia

It is a large worked rock shelter, with several chambers inside it located on the E side. It has a mouth-to-back route of 17.50 metres and an average height of 2.50 metres.

Storia

Cave used and known in the area since prehistoric times. The first speleological mention of the cavity was made by Manuel Cortés in the book “El Montsec i Muntanyes veïnes (1984)”.

Both the Institut Cartogràfic de Catalunya and the official gazetteer of toponymy of Catalonia cite this cavity under the name “cova de Montadó de Baix”, but they wrongly place it in the municipality of Vilanova de Meià and in the comarca of Noguera.

We also have evidence of a reference about this cave in which it is cited under the name “cova de Jaume Alpau”; we do not know where this designation comes from.
