Lavit is an agglutinated form of “la vit”, that is, “the vine”, a Languedoc surname that designated the owner of a vineyard; it is also the name of a commune in Tarn-et-Garonne and of many hamlets in the southwest (Hautes-Pyrénées, Tarn, etc.) and in the Cévennes.
Hypotheses:
- A Mossieu Lavit owned a plot of cultivated land in what is today an almost impenetrable bartas.
- A Mossieu whose name is unknown owned a plot of vines today reclaimed by the bartas.
