Altri dettagli
In 1993 and 1994, the professor of Prehistory at the University of Zaragoza, Pilar Utrilla, and the professor Carlos Mazo, of the Department of Sciences of Antiquity, found in the cave some limestone blocks weighing between one kilo and a kilo and a half and twenty centimetres long. After fifteen years of research it has been possible to decipher that the engravings correspond to a map of the area, which dates back 13,660 years (carbon fourteen), the oldest known in western Europe. One of the stones has a horse's head engraved on it; another engraving is a lighting lamp with rivers and animals drawn on its side, and the other represents with great fidelity the surrounding landscape of the Abauntz cave. On the stone, probably carved with a burin, the mountain located opposite the cave, that of San Gregorio, appears engraved, as well as the river, its tributaries and the plain, in which various circles perhaps represented areas with water pooled in winter, in addition to the animals that lived in the area.
The aforementioned cavity has an age from the Middle Palaeolithic (50,000-40,000 BC) to Roman times, with a dense funerary occupation dated to the third millennium BC. In addition, it has been the subject of several excavation campaigns during the 70s and 90s of the last century, directed from the University of Zaragoza, as well as the protection interest of the Department of Public Works, C. Acaz and I. Santesteban.
Storia
Barandiaran J. M., in "El hombre prehistórico en el País Vasco", says that it is a cavern located on Mount Aitzarte, a prehistoric site with human remains and pottery discovered in 1932 by T. Aranzadi and Barandiaran. In 1975, the Institución Príncipe de Viana and the Department of Public Works. Utrilla began excavating in 1976, encouraged by the late Basque anthropologist D. José Miguel de Barandiarán.
