Grotte du Taillis des Coteaux

The grotte du Taillis des Coteaux at Antigny (Vienne) preserves an exceptional stratigraphy comprising almost the entire Upper Paleolithic, from the Aurignacian to the Middle Magdalenian, passing through the Gravettian, the Badegoulian and the Lower Magdalenian.

The latter yields an archaeological assemblage with original typotechnological characteristics, rich in backed microlamellae, evoking the Magdalenian, but whose dates around 17000 BP are closer to the Badegoulian. This leads the authors to ask whether the strong investment in bladelet production would be a Magdalenian specificity and, consequently, one of its identifying characteristics. In other words, do these industries with backed microlamellae already bear the characteristics of the Magdalenian?
